For the past few years, I’ve been writing Lenten email devotions for the congregation to which I belong, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Johnsonville, PA. I’m doing so again this year, and also posting them on this blog.
Welcome to Lent, 2017.
This season’s devotions grow out of the story of Jensi, a fictional character I created for a recently concluded sermon series at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Johnsonville, PA. At some point in the future, I will post the entirety of “Jensi’s Story” on my blog. For the purpose of these devotions, it is enough to know the following about her.
Jensi, 27 years old, was pregnant with the child of her deceased husband. In the darkness of despair, she visited the bridge over a creek where her late husband had proposed marriage. While there, the voice of Jesus spoke, telling her the child in her womb would grow to play a special role in God’s work: drawing people to God, fighting hunger, caring for creation, and building bridges of understanding between people who differ from one another. It is around the last of these, the building of bridges, that these devotions will focus.
May this Lent be a time that nurtures our trust in God and our compassion for others.
Lord Jesus, walk with us this Lent. Give us the opportunity to build bridges of understanding. Amen.
